25 : 1 (seed piece)
Hand rolled and pinched seeds are watered by visitors and participants. Bearing no fruit and acting retroactively on the bone dry clay, destroying them as they disintegrate back into the dirt by being watered mirror the hundreds of pounds of produce lost by maintaining, even increasing meat production.
Endurance piece started in 2020, discussing labor, minority exploitation, and resource loss due to the capitalist strategies involved in the markets of nonhuman animalized proteins. Intended to have audience participation, this work is to highlight the labors of minorities in the U.S. and their erasure from the public eye, which further creates dissonance between people and what/who they’re consuming.
These seeds (a main component of the feed going to nonhuman animals) act as reminders of all that is put into factory farm operations rather than going directly to humans who are ever so in need, locally and globally. For every pound of beef processed, twenty five pounds of wheat are processed and fed to the nonhuman animals suffering in factory farms, mixed in with other grains and plastics to quickly get them to a suitable “kill weight”.
Rather than reallocating resources like clean water, grains, and land to humans in need, Big Meat would rather breed more lives into the world that will only be met with suffering for the entirety of their short lives.
